This painting, dating to ca. 1470-1480, depicts the ancient Greek myth of the nymph Daphne who turns into the laurel tree in order to escape the amorous advances of the god Apollo. The story is told most famously in the Latin epic, written in ca. 8 CE by the poet Ovid, called the Metamorphoses. It is one of the first of many stories in the poem where anthropomorphic beings transform into elements of the natural landscape, which hosts their mythological narratives.
